We just got the six guineas that we ordered over a month ago.
Unfortunately, they didn't come with the chicks as we had planned. I was
planning on raising them with the chickens, and letting them loose later
to wipe out ticks, mosquitoes, and the like.
They almost weren't delivered today. As it is, they are really young
(probably about a day old). They're still wobbly on their feet. They
took to pecking in the litter (shaved pine) rather than using the
feeder, so I tossed some starter food in the litter. Hopefully, they'll
find the feeder soon. I had to show them the waterer, but they drank as
soon as they saw the water. That's one less worry.
The chicks never gave me any worries. They went after the food and water
right away.
The books I have are rather short on information about Guineas. Can
anyone recommend some web sites that have more info?
I am currently adding another chicken area to the existing one (former
dog pen). The baby chicks will be put there during the day. When they
are fully feathered out, they will stay out overnight. The Guineas will
be integrated with them as soon as they get big enough to take care of
themselves. Right now, the size difference is too great. I don't expect
the Guineas to ever get as big as the chickens, but they should make up
for that with personality. :-)

a bit and click on the box Chic'N Chatter to go to their forum.

Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake
when you make it again.

Thanks!

That should be enough information to keep me busy for a while.

By the way, one keet was dead the morning after I brought them home. It
had a bare spot in the middle of its belly, so I suspect that there was
some kind of a birth defect.

I didn't have any experience with keets, so I didn't figure that it's
unusual for one to make a distress sound fairly regularly. Once that
one had died, there were very few distress sounds. We were all sad to
lose the little thing, but that's part of the life of a farmer. I am
delighted that we haven't lost a single chicken.

The wing feathers are just starting to come in on the five that remain.
They have also been moved to bigger quarters. When we moved the chicks
out of the 100 gallon stock waterer (we had 35 chicks in that waterer),
I cleaned it and set it aside. I added new litter and put the keets in
just a couple hours ago.

While I was doing this, I found a cricket. The keets seemed almost
afraid of the bug. If it's still in the pen tomorrow, I'm going to give
it to the chickens. They know what to do with a cricket. :-)
