Yes, quite, your mistake is this long list of URLs in your signature,
it's too long to add to every post, please shorten it. A single URL
pointing to *your* site where you list these URLs would be more
appropriate.
Chris Green
You're right,I do need to shorten it. But I keep forgetting why I need
to shorten it on Usenet groups? LoL You see most of the time I am on
MSN,formerly WebTV,discussion groups and there,if we choose to,we are
allowed to put a huge amount of info in our signature boxes, in HTML or
not. So they spoil us folks that way who are on the MSN internet boxes
instead of on computers! LoL
Ronny
You are 'allowed' to put what you like here too, I'd find that sig a
little irritating wherever I saw it.
Chris
Then you would really be irritated if I put in the one I use in some MSN
discussion groups! LoL
Ronny
Usenet netiquette guidelines are just that, guidelines, you can ignore
them if you want.
Chris
Don't want to.
Ronny
However many years of refining them means that they work pretty well, I
suspect that MSN discussion groups are much younger.
Chris
No doubt,as MSNTV,formerly WebTV got started in 1996 and after awhile
they had one discussion group for all their subscribers. You can imagine
that soon caused friction among some people! LoL So then they started
the alt.discuss ngs. And maybe two years ago the started what are called
the club and private newsgroups. Each subscriber to MSNTV can propose a
new alt.discuss group and then that is voted on by any interested MSN
subscriber. And each MSN subscriber can automatically get up to 6 club
or private discussion groups of their own,if they want them. The club
groups are set up so the owner of the group can ban another poster of
delete offensive posts. And the private discussion groups are only
accessable by permission to post their from the owner of that group.
Ronny
Using the '> ' convention to indicate levels of reply also helps a lot
to follow what's going on, it's not just done for fun. I've added extra
'> ' above so that one can tell what is in reply to what. (I haven't
inserted the attributions though, that's a bit hard to do manually)
Chris
The ">" surely are a help in following replies; but then as I said in my
other post to you,I would have to put each of those in manually,so you
can see why I don't do that;especially on a post where several people
have replied back to the origional poster! That would just take a
tremendous amount of time and effort for me to do that manually on every
usenet post I reply to! :-)
And I'm not 100% sure what you mean by attributions? :-) As I said
earlier;I simply put my name after each of my replies and after each of
the replies/quotes of whoever I'm writing back to. I do that because
I've seen many computer users do that on various discussion groups. And
I do it even though it makes better sense to me to put the name
attribute before a quote and before my reply. LoL
Ronny
And sometime I might have to show you what all I have in one sig,in HTML
and with a midi going too, where I post on some MSN discussion groups.
:-) I think you would be shocked at how much info I and some other
people put in out sigs on those groups! LoL Really that's why the one I
use here seems so small to me. (Of course, sometimes I just put in a link
or two for a specific person and then I forget to take it out! I can be
bad about that!) LoL
Ronny
I can't really see any good use for a large sig anywhere, they rapidly
become boring and distract (me anyway) from the essence of the message
you're trying to communicate. A pointer to what you're trying to tell
people about is just as effective and more acceptable as it only takes
one line.
Chris
No sig,of whatever size,in MSN or usenet groups, bore me at all. Of
course, some are more tastfully done than others on the MSN groups! LoL
Mostly I just ignore the sigs unless I have a good reason to want and or
need to look a them. So they don't bother me one way or the other or
take away from any message the poster is trying to communicate;but then
that's just me and I can see how some people could be different on that.
As to the general guidelines on Usenet sigs, the only thing I've seen is
to leave out all HTML and perhaps have up to 3 links. That's a general
guideline I've read somewhere a good while back and of course as you can
see I sometimes go over that 3 links maximum link guideline!LoL
Will try to get it shortened soon though. :-)
Ronny
Can't you arrange your programs to do different things when posting in
different places? That an essential feature for me. My sig changes
according to whether I'm posting on usenet, replying to personal mail,
replying to mail at work, or whatever.
-- Chris Green Nope,I have one program I get from MSNTV and that's it and there's no changing it unless they decide to change it on their computers. But then I get 6 email addies as part of my MSN monthly service,so what I do is use this email address here. Then I use another email addy or two in MSN discuss groups where I can put much more in my sig, including HTML and midi music. I like that; :-) but of course I don't use that anymore on Usenet groups. :-) Then I have my primary email address that I use for business and family. The others are used according to what newsgroup I happen to be posting in. Gotta go. Clothes want hang themself out and for some reason supper refuses to cook itself!LoL Ronny
