I would seriously find out
- what breeders of the breeds you are working with do
- what the breed club of the breeds you are working with thinks
- what your local / regional vets think
- what your area poultry advisor thinks
- what your local VLA thinks

You are in a much more populated area - both in terms of people and
increased likelihood of folks getting a bird here and a bird there which
could increase the risk of some diseases and the stress levels of the birds
involved, and in terms of poultry numbers - and this can have a very
profound effect on the discussion. You have to assess the concentration of
domestics and the commercial - both a lot higher than anywhere on the west
coast
The potential of diseases moving around in the domestic flocks is seriously
concerning the commercial folks
Most pet owners will simply bury a dead chook - with all solemnity and
ceremony - but no post mortem. So they are concerned that any manner of
diseases could travel about and be harboured in the burgeoning domestic
flocks without anyone noticing.
We very seriously need our vets and our VLA [and equivalents] to address the
issue of expense of the blood testing for basic diseases as the NPIP in the
US has done - affordable testing and a breeders scheme to join !!!! - crumbs
rocket science. Also the matter of Post mortems so that folks are encouraged
to take birds in - mind you this does need to be accurate and have the
ability of joined up thinking and constructive follow up --------- so maybe
we will all be waiting quite a while !!

Molly - I would say you need to do more research for your market and your
neck of the woods as the advice there could be significantly different
