Commercial feeds are intended to be complete nutrition. Most, if not
all, layer pellets will have grit in it so you shouldn't need to use
it as a supplement although you should be able to scatter some coarse
sand in the yard. I sometimes scatter ground oyster shells in the
yard & feed them the occasional leftovers, particularly greens, but
that's just to make their lives more interesting.
