hi Everyone
If it's not one thing it's another! Have finally solved the fox problem (
we hope) with 50 metres of electric netting; seems to be working a treat and
our six remaining assorted breed hens have settled down well to their
comparative confinement.. This last week however I have been suspicious at
the lack of any eggs at all and today my suspicions were confirmed by
surprising a magpie with a broken egg. I managed to salvage one egg this
afternoon by snatching it virually as it emerged from the indignant
wyandotte but I cannot stand guard indefinately! We have them primarily for
pets and ornament but the odd egg is very welcome indeed! The hens lay in a
loose box with the nest boxes being old wooden fruit boxes nailed to the
wall. The thing is, how do I stop the magpies; has anyone any suggestions?
It is impractical to roof the area and I'm not even going to attempt to
shoot the magpies as I know they can sense the presence of a shotgun at 2
miles distance! Are there some crow proof boxes that I could make or buy?
I feel that others must have experienced this and so any advice would be
most welcome.
Thanks
Linda
