They've got a shelf about 12" up, and then a perch 3" above that.

Anywhere they feel like it. Usually in the shed on the floor, sometimes up
on the shelf. Once or twice as they're walking round the run outside.

I'm pleased you remembered they're ex-battery; well done !
I'll try lowering the nest-box and see if that helps.
