You were *very* lucky.
I lost several birds to neighbours' dogs. Never lost one to another
predator. Loose dogs even broke into what I thought were safe, closed
coops or runs. The neighbours never understood why some people *like*
their chickens, and even drive hundreds of miles to get one of a special
breed, or some eggs for hatching. For them, it's just a casserole.
