I had a similar problem with my recent purchases. The pullets spent their
whole life in a stable, and the hens had lived in a petting zoo, probably in
a cage. The first night I went in to look at them and they were all piled
on the floor! I mean PILED. In a pile on top of each other. I had to
put each one on the perches by hand. The next day I put in an angled roost
from the floor, but only 1 figured it out. Again, I placed them by hand.
After 3 days even my scratches had scratches. Some of them then tried to
get up themselves, but they couldn't fly that high! They never had the
chance before. And only three ever figured out how to shimmy up the pole.
It took about a week for them to roost by themselves (and a quart of Bactine
for my poor arms).
