... this time nothing to do with hens though.
We've been at Hadleigh Country Park in Essex. We didn't take the hens
because we expected to be in a large, featureless are. When we got there we
were sorry because the hens would have loved it, all sorts of small wild
life to chase and eat, shelter under hedges, various grasses and many
different scratching places.
On Friday evening, at dusk, we saw a fox. It was dusk but it stood and
assessed us then strolled into the Dark Age 'village' and looked back at us
again.
On Sunday morning I noticed one of Spouse's sandals on the ground under out
tent, where it shouldn't have been, I couldn't understand why it should be
there. I went out to retrieve it and from the village a Ranger held up a
period shoe, asking if it were mine. It was, but the straps were missing. It
was from very special pair, hand made for me by someone at the Cordwainers'
Guild. I was upset. Then I went round the back of our tent and found
Spouse's other sandal, some yards away. I picked it up, it's heel strap was
missing. When I checked to see if my other shoe was inside the tent it
wasn't so I went round the village looking for it. It was under a hedge,
straps missing and quite a way from our tent.
We'd both thought we'd heard something after going to bed but assumed it was
wildlife under our tent, our beds are more than three feet off the ground
and we're used to such noises. The floor of our sleeping quarter is two feet
off the ground, we have a step to get into it. The shoes were on that
floor - not the ground.
We told the Alchemist, a friend, about the incident, he thought it was odd
but said that while he was having a pee in the night something ran out of
his tent, a bit bigger than a large cat. He returned to his tent (where
everything but food is on the ground) and came out with his boots - the
leather laces had been chewed off.
Then the toy seller found that his stock of leather pouches had been
scattered and one was missing.
Later, while dressing, I found that my leather belt had been almost chewed
through. One of our flax cord guy ropes was neatly severed at fox head
height. Part of one of my laces was recovered by a volunteer.
The Living History encampment had been visited too, laces, belts, shoes,
anything in leather had been nibbled at least or cut through, at worst they
were lost for ever.
These animals had gone into occupied tents and taken what they wanted,
presumable simply to play with - like biting heads off chickens.
Some people, who should have known better, thought this was a great laugh,
they have no idea of the cost of these hand made items, made from expensive
vegetable tanned leather.
I don't warm to Foxy Loxy.
Mary
