SHAME OF TOP-TABLE CONSERVATION GROUPS
The four leading conservation groups involved in the mass destruction
of rats on Lundy island have been put to shame by a revealing new
Animal Aid undercover video relating to the conduct of the 'cull'.

The so-called 'Lundy Seabird Recovery Project' consists of English
Nature, the Landmark Trust, the National Trust and the RSPB. The
Project's sole aim is to eradicate all the rats on the island,
including the extremely rare black rat, as they claim they are eating
the eggs of seabirds, despite scientific evidence to the contrary.

There are approximately 3000 poison traps on the island, supposedly
fitted with a wire to prevent access by non-target species. However,
the investigation reveals that this was not the case with 50% of them!
This failing greatly increases the risk of poison exposure to other
species, such as the highly valued pygmy shrew, whom it is an offence
to destroy under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. Similarly, the video
shows sheep and chickens grazing immediately next to the poison traps,
with the poison openly exposed! This presents the prospect of poison
entering the human food chain via the much vaunted Lundy lamb.

The rat eradication programme began in January, and the Project
maintained it would be completed by March - the beginning of the
tourist season. However, it is now April and the traps are still
there, despite tourists flocking in. The traps are not marked with
warning signs, and there are no signs anywhere on the island warning
visitors of the poisoning programme.

The Lundy warden claims that there are only 15-20 rats left on the
island. However, given the fact that only four carcasses have been
found, it is unclear how he arrived at this estimate. It is unlikely
that the rats are dying underground, as this would be counter to their
innate behaviour.

Says Animal Aid Campaigns Officer, Becky Lilly:

"It is clear that the poisoning programme has not been as effective as
the Notorious Foursome would have hoped. We find it disgraceful that
the poison is unmarked and fully exposed to whoever cares to touch it.
Of particular concern is the fact that poison is present in areas
where children play - they could easily handle the poison out of
curiosity. We feel as though we have been strongly misled by the
organisations involved, who implied that the cull would be taking
place with the utmost care and professionalism. Hopefully, there still
may be time to stop this cull and save the remaining rats!"

mammals. The poison is inserted through a hole in the top which is
supposed to be covered.
 
LUNDY RAT SLAUGHTER SPARKS OUTCRY
The UK's largest animal protection organisation, Animal Aid, has
condemned four national conservation organisations, namely English
Nature, National Trust, RSPB and Landmark Trust, for their planned
cull of rats on the isle of Lundy.

Lundy is a small island, just 11 miles off the Devon coast and is home
to one of the only remaining colonies of black rats (rattus rattus).
The partnership claims that the rats are threatening the existence of
the puffin and the Manx shearwater. However, a number of scientific
studies have suggested that the seabirds are not at risk from the
rats.

The black rats have lived on Lundy for over four hundred years, and
are an important part of the island's biodiversity. Incidentally, it
is only during the last sixty years that seabird numbers have begun to
decline. It is possible that the decline in seabirds could be due to
the over-fishing of sand eels - part of their staple diet.
Additionally, they are mainly herbivorous animals, who will not
actively predate on other species.

Rattus rattus has itself been described as "one of the rarest mammals
in the UK", therefore it is absurd that one rare species are killed in
order to save another. Neither shearwaters nor puffins are endangered
species worldwide and their decline on Lundy does not threaten the
overall survival of the species. An argument the partnership has used
is that the black rat is not indigenous to the Lundy isle - however,
neither are the soay sheep or the sika deer - two of Lundy's most
treasured mammals.

The cull method to be used is poison by a second generation
anti-coagulant, difenacoum. This will be placed in bait traps which
will supposedly lure the rats. However, there is the very real
possibility that other mammals and birds could be drawn to the bait or
dead rats, and inadvertently become poisoned themselves. Even the most
rigorous of checking procedures could not prevent this from happening.

Says Animal Aid Campaigns Officer, Becky Lilly:

"There is a growing tendency amongst top-table conservation groups to
attempt to restore ecological harmony through wholesale slaughter.
This is not the way forward. In this case, more controls on commercial
fishing, management of pollution and protection of breeding sites
would help boost the seabird population."

Animal Aid has called upon all the organisations involved to end the
cull, but as yet have received no reply.
