Hi Mary,
don't worry. In a country where the drainage pipes can just run along
the walls outside the houses, chickens are safe. Provided they have a
dry and draft-free place to live in. Dryness is more important than
warmth.
It's amazing to see for me every time I'm in England. Here in Germany,
we have to keep all the pipes inside the walls, well insulated, and the
water pipes and sewers outside have to be buried at least 80cm deep to
keep the water in them from freezing in winter. At least, in most
winters.
