In that case he's as big an idiot as you. Without supplements none of the
vegetarians I know exhibit those symptoms nor, by all accounts, did those
at the Vegetarian Society Awards earlier this week.
Perhaps your GP friend is mistaking a poor diet with little protein with a
vegetarian diet which certainly need not be poor (with or without
supplements).
