We bought our first batch of chicks this past spring, and I added barred
rocks just for old time's sake (we had chickens when I was a kid). I'm
glad we did. They are good hens. They sure out-produce the
araucanas -- but we'll see what happens next spring.

If you want to experiment a bit, araucanas/americanas are a good choice
because they lay blue (if they're pure bred) or green (some cross bred)
eggs. We decided to ignore the 'customers prefer uniform eggs' doctrine
and put two blue eggs in each dozen. Since we have a variety of egg
sizes and shapes, we put them into the carton in a symmetric pattern.
The customers love them.
