Correct - we have a version called 'Parliamentary democracy'. But the
point remains - the majority has a right to put through any law
whatever. Protecting minorities simply isn't a feature of democracy,
though it may (or may not) be desirable for any number of reasons.
In this particular case, the important thing was to put the unelected
chamber firmly in its place.
