Ha, I'd love to be able to do the whole self provision thing, I really would
but this thing about eating ones own livestock is a hurdle I can't get over.
I think maybe naming them doesn't help.
The neighbour gave us a bit of bacon from his pig.... I had looked into this
beasts eyes, I'd scratched its ears... I ate the bacon..... I also felt
quietly guilty as a result.
If it had been our pig, seen every day, cared for by us.... I couldn't have
eaten any of it.
My theory is, have animals that can provide for you without having to be
killed to do it. Chickens come high on my list because they get on with
laying their eggs without a 'midwife' being present. Next is a milking
animal, bit more work involved getting the milk but worthwhile.
We're looking for a milking goat so I guess I'll find out just how much work
is involved.
Gawd, think of the banquet one could have if one had the where-with-all to
have homekill.
I wish the neighbour had your husbands ability to cull old ewes, he has two
and they had twins and triplets this year. Poor old things are really, well
and truly on their last legs. The thought of these two gems not being around
any more is very sad but they are so old and struggling to cope which is
sadder. Both were pets and have real personalities. I hope these two are
too old and knarly for dog tucker, they deserve a bit of dignity.
