Keeping chickens

Hello,

sorry if this is not the right group to post to...

I'm thinking about keeping chickens in my garden. Anyone point me to
some good starting places for information? Also, do we need to get
permission from anyone, or is just like keeping pets?

Anyone advise on a good number to keep in a medium sized garden? Would
two egg-layers be ok, or would there be some reason I should have
more?

If this is the wrong group to post this to, anyone know which would be
better?

Thanks!
