I can't add a lot to Jill's response, other than note that in the three
weeks my chooks have been laying that I've found droppings in a nesting box
just once.

Also - when my pullets were moved out of their box in the basement into the
hen house, the first night the majority slept on the floor. The next night I
put them on the roost after they had bedded down. Every night after that
they got up on the roost by themselves.

An advantage to using a 2x4 rounded on the corners for a roost is that the
bird then covers its feet with its feathers as it sleeps, keeping the feet
from getting frostbite.
