I'm not sure it's FDA approved, but hide glue is, in essence, boiled
hooves, etc. Hence the term "Off to the glue factory with ya". Since
people eat pigs' feet, I doubt hide glue is intrinsically toxic.
However, it's hard to come by and a mess to work with, so I doubt you'd
want to go that route.
Regular old white glue like used in school ought to be non-toxic; Lord
knows I ate enough of it when I was a kid.
I have made a number of food-contact items (cutting boards, etc.) using
yellow carpenters glue, and we have apparently suffered no ill
effects...and we have apparently suffered no ill effects...and we have
apparently suffered no ill effects. ;)
The only ones I'm not sure about are the polyurethane glues. Nothing
specific is coming to mind as far as them being toxic, but they are
synthetic chemicals, and until convinced otherwise, I'd stay away from
them.
