 Some younger hens which only started to lay late in the year may well lay
eggs throughout the winter.

 Ducks seem to cope better with cold. They do after all have a nice thick
duck down vest :0)
 Hoestly, try poking your finger between their feathers, it is really thick
and waterproof. A bit like you or I wearing a really thick padded and
quilted coat.
