Should I leave the heat lamp in there? the temps around here are 30 and
lower.
I do not move the enclosure, but I do shovel the top layer of "dirt" feces
off and put it into my garden compost. I also used a tiller to loosen the
soil inside the enclosure twice last year. Which I will do as soon as the
ground warms up again. I use this loosened dirt in my garden. I put all the
chickens compost into my large garden area then till it until mixed
thoroughly. The chickens "new" dirt is last years garden soil. In the summer
I let them roam the yard freely until dark, then they are locked in the
enclosure. They roam through the garden and the lawn. the destroyed an area
in my yard about 6 ft wide. Right down to the dirt. When I went to repair
the damage I found out why they were doing this, GRUBS, right there under
the dirt were many many grubs, I bet they were loving that treat! I dont'
know how to rid my yard of the grubs with the chickens around, I don't want
to use any poisons that would effect the chickens. But I just let them eat
all the grubs they want, grass seed is cheap anyway!
Yes, they get plenty of fresh water (3 X a day) I do not have a water
source out to the enclosure, which would freeze at this time of year. The
chickens get three gallons of fresh water daily. I usually use hot water so
it doesn't freeze before they have time to drink.
How often should they be fed? I feed them at 7 AM and then again at 6 PM
(if the bowl is empty). Is this too much food? I use a 1 cup measuring
container and fill the bowl with : 2 cups mixed grain 2 cups of layer feed
and .05 cup of crushed shells. Is this ok for them. According to out local
farmers store these are the feeds I was told to purchase.
