Sound like the hawks know a good thing when they see it.

A hawk is not a good animal to start with. Rabbits, doves and game animals
make sense, not birds of prey.

Exactly how does one become a "fairly good shot" w/o owning a weapon? I
shoot once per week and describe myself in the same way. I would put up
nets, barriers and the like before killing a hawk. You set the buffet and
they attend.

String crap over the main area the chickens where the chickens forage.
Barring good sense, any descent shotgun with #6's or #4's for loads will do
nicely.
