Hi Dan and Welcome!
Oh my gosh, 50 ... they aren't all roosters are they? If they're
straight run you'll still have about 25 plus or minus roosters, oh my gosh.
We had some day-old ducklings shipped in last year, and of course they
needed to have some chicks for warmth. Stupid us didn't think, we should
have paid extra for hens, but no, and they sent us mongrel roosters. Aargh!
We lost a couple during the brooding, and we lost a few more once they
became mature and started fighting with each other, literally to the death.
Once introduced to the rest of the flock, they spent their time harassing
our hens and our established roosters (we had the right ratio, but not any
more, we're looking for someone to take the new roosters now), and fighting
among each other. Even though they were brought up nice, they are not nice
to their own (although they're not harassing us, at least). They're
separated now so they don't hurt our flock (and we will soon have day-old
pullets coming, hopefully no more boys).
So I feel for you ... and don't get attached, most of the boys will
have to go to the happy hunting ground. Yes, this from someone who has to
do the same thing and can't, so is looking for someone to take them, but
yes, that many boys is a bad thing.
