Wish Ducks Could Speak!

Hi,

I'm new to this group - and was going to post about the Mallard
ducklings we lost to a fox last Monday - but two days ago, on Friday (here in the UK) I walked up to the pond and there was the Mallard hen on her raft. I called my wife and as she approached the four ducklings we thought had been eaten rose up from under their mother and swam over to us.

What's going on? On Monday the mother and four ducklings (themselves
the survivors of a clutch of ten) which had hatched on the 6th of May
dissapeared. I walked all around the pond and and saw a big dog fox
over our wire boundary (stock)fence.

Where did the Mallard/s go? How and where did they hide and what made
them come back? I wish they could tell us....

They are having electric netting installed later this week in place of
the two row wire they have now, so here's hoping they make it till
then.....

Thanks for any help,

Chris Lovett
.
