I like "Raising Poultry the Modern Way" (also called "Storey's Guide to
Raising Chickens"), and "The Chicken Health Handbook". They are published
by Storey Books http://www.storey.com/books/ and are available at Amazon
and BN.com

I've also gotten a lot of antique poultry books at eBay. They are full of
old, useless knowlege ("Dr. Baker's Poultry Perker-upper will cure all her
ills!"), and apparently Sulfa was used to cure every last thing, but some of
the conditions listed aren't in the modern books. Also the old books are
printed on high-quality paper and ink have tons and tons of great pictures
which modern books skimp on. One of my old books has pictures of a dozen
kinds of scaly leg, but the modern books only mention a couple. One of my
favorite antiques is "Electricity Comes to the Farm": it's about how
electricity can change your life and you should allow the county to wire
your barn. Too cute.

Often I will look up a condition in the old books just to see pics of what
it looks like, then go to the modern ones to find out how to handle it.

I had a duck that went lame at 6 months and the current books didn't have
anything on it. One old book from the 1920's discussed "range paralysis"
which occurs when young ducks are released to pasture. They didn't know the
cause; it was assumed that feeding on grass was the culprit and it can't be
cured, just prevented by keeping them caged. The visiting vet came and
examined her and he said that it was, indeed "range paralysis", but that
these days we call it "cancer"!!. He said that in the old days that kind of
tumor (pressing on a leg nerve) only became apparent when the ducklings were
let out to roam (at 6-7 months) so they used to thnik that ranging on
pasture was the cause.
