We've got a broody who is currently sitting a clutch. She's a street accident by breed (Solid Sid the speckled Sussex is her father, and her mother is a "Speckled Belle"), but even when lifted from the eggs (and shut away from them) she won't eat, drink, or mute. I've never seen this before - any ideas, anyone?
Locking her away from her eggs will only distress her. In that distressed flustered state she can think of nothing but getting back to her eggs.
I have never seen a bird starve on her eggs, but most only eat every second or third day. If she does not eat for three weeks, she will be very thin, and might die. Thirst is more of a concern.
You could try taking her a distance from her nest 20 or 30 yards and letting her make her own way back past the feed and water. I have noticed that some hens don't eat until they void, and making her walk that distance should cause her to void. It will also allow her body temperature to drop a bit. Which might allow hunger to enter her feverish brain.
But I would do very little at all until a week had passed.
