duck clutch disaster
Dear All,
We promised an update on our muscovy brood. I'm afraid none of the eggs
hatched, but it took us a long time to be sure of this, as Jem kept on
laying, so that we had twelve eggs in all. We segregated the two drakes
after this, kept her fed and watered, and waited, and waited. She seemed to
be doing all that was right, sitting for so long that she became quite thin
and pale around the gills, and aggressively defending her nest. But the
eggs, when we finally removed them, contained only a dark, offensive liquid.
Horribly putrefying. We've gone off ducks eggs for a while!
Maybe the nest was too hot (we had a hot spell in the South of England).
Maybe jem's a 'mule', or the boys aren't up to the task.
Is there any way to tell?
