That's what I do, but I also cut just the front of the throat after
whacking them as they need to bleed. Do it right and it's not messy.
Plust you save the blood in a bowl of water for the rose bushes. ;_)

I restrain and use a piece of metal pipe.
One good HARD whack (usually followed by 1 or two more just to be sure)
kills quick. The body trembles if you do it right, then spasms. I hold
legs and wings together and stretch the neck out and whack HARD at the
base of the skull. Then cut the throat after it trembles before it
starts trying to flop.
