I don't agree with that at all
A well managed house will need cleaning out - yes but they are not messy at
all
Bedding is definately a cost you have to consider but then it does make a
great activator for the compost heap

Crumbs -- that is expensive feeding
A productive type chicken eats around 110 - 125 grammes per day
so a 20 kg bag lasts 166 days per bird
A bag should cost you around $15 -- is that right?
so that is less than 10 cents a day
