Sick Duckling Knocking on Deaths Door!!!

I am all new to the country life, (I am a born city girl) but we bought
a house and now are doing the country living. I have 27 chickens and 2
geese, 2 ducklings, and 1 sweeney duck male,,, My female sweeney got
eaten by a possum... I am new to this and learning daily! I bought my
2 ducklings at the same time one male one female they are the size of
mallards but I don't think that is what it is... I bought them at 2-3
wks old, they are now about 11 wks... The female duckling has fallen
ill 9 days ago. She started of walking really sluggish, not keeping up
with the others and progressively had gotten worse 5 days in to it she
was unable to walk or swim in the pond.... She would flip over, and
would have drowned if I hadn't jumped in to get her out. I brought her
back in to the house where it is warmer than outside (but it is COLD
outside, chilly yes)during the nights and let her back out with the
others in the morning. I called around to see what was wrong with my
duck, but everyone was baffled and even the vet wouldn't see the duck
for lack of knowledge of them. I am not sure if the starter food I was
giving them had gotten moldy, but the others had all eaten the same
stuff.... The duckling would eat and drink like normal, but was
completely immobilized. I have heard that ducks cannot tolerate
antibiotics and it will kill them.
I had some left over antibiotics from my dog and I gave it to the
duck... First I had read something over the net to give her sugar
water incase she is plugged up (poop shoot). She did go to the
bathroom but NO improvement on her ability to walk(3 days of sugar
water and food). I then sprinkled a little bit of capsule for
Amoxacillin 500mg in her water for 3 days. I just sprinkled a little
in her water and made sure SHE drank it all gone, but still NO
change.... Now for the past 3 days I have divided the 500mg capsule in
to 3 doses and sprinkle it on her tongue and follow it up with water,
one time daily. Yesterday (day 2) she was up on her feet walking!!!
And today she is doing better and looking healthier... I had noticed
yesterday one of her wings looks like a FRIED wing that you would get
from store... Just one of her wings, It looks Crispy, and threw the
skin it looks like it may have been infected... I don't know why this
is.... I cannot see any bite marks on it, but I wonder if she didn't
get bit by a spider.... Also threw this whole process her beak has has
red spots/blotches on it.... Has anyone had this experience???
Please understand I am NOT a Doctor, I have in the past worked at a
doctors office answering the phones, that is my extent of knowledge...
But I was faced with a duck that was dieting, and NO ONE would help..
and the duck has a will to live..... So I was faced with giving the
duck some antibiotic to cure it or kill it.... And like I said she was
knocking on deaths door, for some reason she wasn't being let in and
now she looks like she is on the road to recovery.......
Please let me know if you have a similar story.... I am also not sure
how long to keep these meds up, I am thinking 7-10 days...
