(Sorry, I know I'm repeating myself now, but I can't restrain myself)
Dogs are not chickens ;-)
Show dogs are pedigree dogs with no other ancestors than dogs of the
same breed. Purebred. Closed registers.
In chickens, breeders follow completely different ethics. Introducing
"fresh blood" by crossing in birds of an entirely different breed is not
frowned upon at all, but considered good practice. (This is only
changing very slowly in some of our clubs here) During the last decades,
this has been done to such an extent that you can hardly tell one breed
from another in terms of genetic relationships (of course they do *look*
differently but genetically speaking, they're so closely related that it
can be questioned whether they can still be regarded as distinct breeds
at all). If these chickens were dogs, they'd all be called Heinz 57s !!!
There are only a few breeds today that have been kept more or less
"pure", with populations that for whatever reason have been isolated. In
such breeds, there often is a typical feature that would have been lost
by continuously introducing other breeds.
But most breeds have had this substantial influence by other breeds, and
I think it is clear now that in addition to what just the usual
selection of a breeder does to a line, also their decision what other
birds to introduce can make a lot of difference between strains.
This is one more reason why the name of the breed is often much less
important than the actual strain your birds come from especially if you
want something other than show birds.
I think going for variety is a good idea if for some reason you can't
find a breeder who selects for the same ideal, because it increases your
chance of getting close to your target just by shooting off several
arrows!
