Being in the middle of the country does not mean you have to have 1000's of
rats
If you are seeing alot of rats - rather than just thinking there are lots
there - then you might need to get bigger guns in.
Look up rodent pest control and get them in to bring the situation under
control
Just being in the country does not equal rats out in the open
We are also, we have a lot of birds, and quite a number of buildings
We also sell feed so we have lots and lots of bags of feeds on the farm at
any one time
While they are about as we see the odd nest when we move the big layer
houses there are not a lot
We do keep things around the buildings and around the feed fairly tidy so
any ideas they might have area soon found and dealt with
Some years ago there was an outbreak in the population in the area - we
cleared / and moved everything and laid alot of bait. The population here
was dealt with pretty quickly - but others in the area had weeks of lamping
and shooting or getting the council in. One croft fitted lights all around
their immediate yard and could turn them on from inside and shoot as many as
they had caught in the lights. They had a beautiful place too - not nasty
and dirty. The place would be absolutely crawling with rats. It was really
horrid.
Since then however there have been few problems

They may control a sensible population but rats are not the best eating if
there are more interesting things like rabbits, birds and the smaller
rodents which are better munches.

If your impression of a serious rat problem is true - or even somewhat
true - then they may well be pretty disturbed by their activity
I would seriously look at getting outside help - if only to get a good
assessment of the problem and some good strategies to help YOU
