Did you put yourself out to be friendly to them? Even the most curmudgeonly
country yokel like me cannot ignore a smiling face and a greeting.

Great, thanks. We can do without whinging townies.
Having lived abroad myself I found that doing some research into the place I
wanted to move to was useful, showing a willingness to adapt and attempt to
speak the language the same.
I have to say I live lived all over the world and never experienced such
unfriendliness as you have experienced.
