An egg hunt everyday!
But I really don't miss the screaming hens from overzealous roosters. I
loved my Klamity Klem, but the younger roos played too rough! I was
thinking of getting another Roo this spring at a chicken swap meet. But
going over the winter without any roos has been very peaceful. I decided
it's just easier to buy chicks rather than raise my own.. Once I've
phased out all of the non-Australorps, I may get a rooster.
Re: Can someone give me some info on hens? ... >> thinking about getting a couple hens for eggs. ... >> thing about raising chickens.... > You need a brooder to keep chicks warm until they fledge. ... > hens, you eat the roosters.... (misc.rural)
Re: whack em and stack em vs hacking them ... I was told it was easier to clean the necks if you whacked em in the back of the heads, cleaned them, and THEN cut off their heads. ... So with roosters now old enough to tyrranize the hens.... They are all screaming and running from roos, and the roos are NOT gentlemen, I decided it was time to thin the roo populations again With Klem gone, I've experienced my first predation losses since his arrival. ... Re: When to remove from brooder ... chook-house, but RELYING on chooks to go broody and stay broody when you want them to, as opposed to all other times, would be a bit risky. ... Depends of course on how many chicks you need and how vital the replacement birds are. ... Doesn't really matter to me except that at one stage I ended up with a large number of geriatrics down to 5 large eggs per year & the rest of the year grousing about whose turn it was with the walking frame. ... One mainly-frizzle rooster with a fairly gentle voice and a courtly attitude to the ladies, one bigger, noisier, brasher fellow who is one day going to be liberated at the freedom colony of roosters that lives near a small town nearby - some people complain, other people take visitors to see them because they're interesting and anarchic and take them food, and they seem to do rather well for dropouts - and two pullets. ...
