Re: culling poultry if birdflu comes

Hello poultry people,
maybe that subject should read 'when' birdflu comes. I only have half
a dozen chickens and three muscovy ducks; but with anxious neighbours
all around, I'm committed to culling them in anticipation, if the
disease reaches the UK.

Why?
Unless an outbreak occurs where you are there is no need to and no good
reason to.
They are certianly no risk to your neighbours.
It is much better to inform your neighbours about the real situation than
have them believing that they are at mortal risk of every duck they might
meet in a park. Their quality of life is being sorely weakened.

Rather than destroy them for nothing, I'd like to freeze and eat
them. (They are presently healthy, after all).
I have no resources/experience/tools for this kind of thing.
Any advice from the group?
Many thanks
Alex

What breed are your chickens and what age?
Anything over a year old and they are going to be pretty tough.
The Muscovies are better eating but tougher to kill. Rather like geese they
have tough necks.
Do you know anyone in your locality with a legal air-rifle?

Plucking is long winded and for older birds portion meat recipes are
probably better so its quicker to skin them and take off the meat.
Use the carcasses to create a lot of really wonderful stock which you can
freeze in small pots for later use
