BELGRADE, Feb. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Fatal H5N1 bird flu virus has been
confirmed in a wild swan found dead last week on a Croatian island,
announced spokesman of Croatia's Agriculture Ministry Mladen Pavic on
Tuesday, local media reported.
Veterinary authorities detected the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus in the
dead swan which was found on the southern island of Ciov.
Related government departments have already set up a headquarters on the
island, Pavic said, speaking from the capital city of Zagreb.
A three kilometer isolation zone surrounding the beach where the swan was
found has been set up, he added.
Croatia detected the H5N1 strain of bird flu in October last year but
managed to control its spread with stringent measures. The country has
banned imports of all products related to poultry from countries in which
H5NI bird flu virus continues to spread, including Slovenia, Italy, Bulgaria
and Greece. Enditem
