Re: 2 strains of H5N1?

I'm inclined to be skeptical of anything that claims two strains of H5N1, as
a new strain would entail a new number (H5N4), no?

The older strain, pre-2002, has been in wild birds for millions of
years. But the newer strain of the same virus is very lethal to
domestic poultry in Asia, while remaining non-lethal to its wild bird
hosts. In other words, it can travel in wild birds and not make them
sick, but if those birds connect with Marketplace poultry, the disease
can become highly pathological. Or so the claim goes.


It only travels in some orders of Aves
Others have high mortality
Others may not be infected or affected in any way but would in a local
situation be a risk due to physical transmission from the ground in ome
place to another


I don't think the mainstream media is aware of the distinction between
the two strains of H5N1. They keep reporting that H5N1 has been found
here, there and everywhere. Of course it will be found! It has been
in wild birds for millions of years!!! Why don't they make a clear
distinction between the highly pathological strain of H5N1, and the
ancient, non-lethal strain? Or have I missed it??

Strains of AI -- there are many H1 through H9 if memory serves. -- mostly
move around the globe as Low Pathogenic LPAI
Every so often one mutates into a a High Pathogenic form HPAI
It is this that they are reporting !"here, there and everywhere"
Not the LPAI
They can tell the difference and they are testing birds around the globe
all the time
This particular HPAI is mutating all the time -- thats one of the things
the real scientists are most worried about - its genetics are as mobile as
a silberfish
