Re: Best Mix of Geese?

Thanks, Jill! helpful as always

If they are that raucous I don't have enough room for two ganders. I have 5
acres, a bit over 3 acres used by 25 birds. The coop has two rooms and I
plan to add a 3rd room for the new arrivals, but that would be about it.
The ducks tend not to go into the coops unless they are nesting and I have
two haybale shelters in the pens that they mainly use. I was planning to
add another shelter outside and another coop room, but I don't think I would
have room this year for 2 bickering goose families. When the ducks bicker
they take up all of the spaces!

And BTW I promise I will not wallow in my ignornace for long: I have 3 goose
books (Hollderad +) on the way and I won't order my goslings until I've read
them all. I just always need info from my own flock of experts ;-)

Hi Everyone, and Happy New Year!

I have ducks and chickens and I am planning to get geese. My question:
what
is the best mix of sexes? I plan to get around 6 goslings and I have
read
that some breeds mate for life, so perhaps an even split is better than
more
females. Is 2 ganders/4 geese OK? Or should I do 3 and 3? 1 and 5?

how much space have you got?
Domestics get very attached but to more than one in the flock if they are
available
They are not single pairs
Unless you have quite some acres I would go for 1 and 5 as 2 ganders can
craete real ructions
We have had more but they can roam over 24 acres so the bachelors can get
out of the way and the family groups can use different areas if they
choose

I am deciding between American Buff and the (small) Toulouse, leaning
towards the Buff. I live in upstate NY and I'll be getting them from
Metzer. Also any opinions on those breeds (temperment, hardiness, etc)
would
be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance
