Mallards cross-breed freely! Here in New Zealand there are hundreds of wild ducks that congregate at pools in public gardens - and a week or 2 before the opening of the duck-shooting season their numbers swell - how do they know? But getting to the point: there are "mallards" with all sorts of variations.
