I am wanting to try to preserve some of the rare and rarest of the rare
breeds.
But I need to be fully prepared first so I am just currently doing research
and surveying people.

very well
However - what birds are you looking for?
This is the main question.
In the US there are a number of options which have different qualities of
birds - feedstores, hatcheries, and breeders.
Depending on your requirements your choice will vary
