I am wanting to try to preserve some of the rare and rarest of the rare
breeds.
Then go to individual breeders
Be prepared to travel many many miles to visit the people you make contact
with
You cannot supermarket buy that sort of genetics.
Again there is another choice -- are you wanting to start a flock selecting
for utility breeding or show queen breeding?
This will determine the breeders you need to contact.
HAving got in touch have a large piece of paper beside you when you phone
them, you will pick up lots of gems from each one and you will have to
scribble fast to capture them all
Talking to breeders will also give you the opportunity to see if they are
doing things in the way you want to
For instance how do they select their next generation?
What records do they keep especially if you are interested in utility
breeding?
If its show queen qualities you are looking for go to as many shows as you
can as far apart as you can to get your eye in and see who what and where.
When you have some of your lines sorted out -- and you will need several
lines of each breed so that is a lot of pens <big grin> you may find it
interesting to get some of the big commercial hatchery birds to compare and
to see if they have any qualities you need to introduce.
But I need to be fully prepared first so I am just currently doing
research and surveying people.
Well done
Its time very well spent
Which breeds are you particularly interested in
The Yahoo groups have a number of lists which have US breeders contributing
