If rare breeds are your interest, I just found a hatchery specializing in
this during my research into developing my own flock later this summer. Sand
Hill Preservation Center (http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/) focuses on
preservation of rare breeds of poultry and heirloom fruits and vegetables. I
haven't ordered from them, but they do combine the convenience of the mail
order hatcheries with the focus on rare breed preservation. Many of the
breeds on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy priority list
(http://www.albc-usa.org/wtchlist.htm#poultry) are sold by this hatchery,
although they have a tendency to have many breeds unavailable due to their
business practices (they have to hatch conservatively because they don't
kill off the excess chicks like some of the larger volume hatcheries.) I'm
planning on ordering some of the breeds I'm taking up from this place.

I am wanting to try to preserve some of the rare and rarest of the rare
breeds.
But I need to be fully prepared first so I am just currently doing
research and surveying people.
