sudden death of R.I. Red Hen

Greetings,

My wife and I live in southern Indiana. We're relatively new to raising
chickens and have a concern. We've had this flock of 6 hens and a
rooster (Rhode Island Reds) since last June. There have been no
problems other than one of the hens occasionally has laid eggs without
a shell. Yesterday all 6 hens laid and seemed to be perfectly healthy.
This afternoon as I went to gather eggs, after returning home from
work, one of the hens was lying flat on its belly, breathing w/much
labor, and had some fluid(appeared to be clear) coming out the mouth. I
went to the house, came back within 5 minutes and she was dead. The
other hens were pecking at her, but not aggressively. This hen had most
of the feathers just above the tail feathers stripped off from frequent
rooster activity. Anything I should be worried about here??? The other
hens are bright-eyed and fine as of now.

Many thanks,
Brian
