Hi, Jill!
Thanks (blushing). Things are never dull around here. This was
actually the second survivor this year, the other being a calf that
lost its mom. Vet expected the cow to make it, but she gave up (being
all of 16years old) and the calf made it. At least with orphaned birds
you don't have to worry about being "butted" in the tush by a 200lb.
curly silver baby looking for its next meal!
The battle for good sleeping quarters is on. Charlie ran Frankie, Les,
and Beau out of the barn tonight. Since I lost a gosling to their
fighting last night, I put Charlie and all three moms(one still
sitting) in the same secure stall tonight. Beau is confused. He has a
goose in with Charlie and another that Frankie is trying to claim. Les
knows he's going to be on his own for another week or two, so he's laid
back about it. Frankie...we're not even sure what Frankie is. The man
that sold her/him to my daughter said that it was a goose and even sold
a gosling with her/him that Frankie protected and cared for with the
story that it was one of two that she hatched. Not unusual for some
males to be very good parents, though, even if the gosling is not
theirs. Frankie's posture on the pond and actions around the other
geese leads me to think he's a gander. I've had to break up some nasty
fights between Frankie and Charlie. My other females don't fight with
the males like that.
Anyway, it looks like the new moms want to be inside with their little
ones at night. I've heard the coyotes up here behind the house at
night and caught two large dogs stalking the birds into the pond
yesterday. Hope this works out.
Have a beautiful day!
