I just had my first road killed chicken today. She's now in the crockpot

Yum
Spent most of the morning turkey hunting. Saw no turkeys, and got to
feeling bad because my puppy was probably ready to bust a gut, and came
home to find him in a flooded crate. I called in no turkeys, but peaked
the curiousity of 12 does wondering what I was doing. I've got about
$200 wrapped up in turkey hunting gear, $25 in a turkey tag, and will
probably spend about $200 in gas before I'm through in pursuit of
turkey. It would be cheaper to go to the store and buy one
Sounds like fun although expensive. Hope you bag some soon to make the outlay worth your while. Fuel is the killer isn't it. I think its AU$1.40 litre here, rough exchange US$4.75 gal. Diesel is worse. Do you have to travel far, a local game reserve or state forest or out the back of your own block?
Our wild turkeys (bustards) are protected - hell everything's protected here, even the politicians although the indigenous people can kill them (the bustards, not the pollies) and any other native fauna.
We don't have feral deer here but my brother on the eastern seaboard hunts and stocks his freezer with feral deer. We have kangaroos which are edible but I find the local ones rank. I think they browse on local vegetation, some of which has high levels of 1080 poison. Local fauna is immune but I swear it taints the meat. (Have I said this before?? please forgive if I'm repeating myself)
Another lovely autumn day outside so I'd better do something constructive. The bookwork calls as do my chickens, livestock and garden - I know which is more fun.
Catch you
