Here are the hatching results from my "round" Shetland eggs - I
graded the eggs into three categories:
1 "round" which were not quite round, but almost
2 eggs with both ends rounded, but elongated
3 eggs with one rounded end and the other end less rounded
Group 1 - 5 eggs from 14 hatched 36%
Group 2 - 8 eggs from 16 hatched 50%
Group 3 - 11 eggs from 12 hatched 92%
So it looks like the egg shape affected hatchability as Tina
suggested it might.
I have used this incubator for the last 7 years and this was the
WORST hatch ever....
maybe my broody hen will fare better with her 6 eggs - I hope so!
As Jill said, not wholly unexpected, but VERY interesting. Thanks for
that. Completed my own, rather trivial experiment the other day
(mainly to answer my son's question about how long an egg remains
edible for (left intact at room temperature in it's shell)) Up to two
months was the general concensus (very unscientific) however of more
interest was the fact that the Araucana eggs kept fresher
significantly longer than all the others. Presumably due to a thicker
shell. Worth bearing in mind if you want to know which ones need to
be used up first :-) Rosie
Also very interesting. How did you do this, break an egg a day and
sample it until you found an unpalatable egg?
