One way to find out how old they are is to put them in a bowl of water.
Really fresh eggs will sink down (small air pocket), old ones will float
(large air pocket) and the ones in between will "stand" on the pointed
end.

Nuele, thanks for the tip, but I have used that method, and it was only
reliable up to a point. I found some eggs that were fine for us to eat were
bouncing up on end, but worse, if they were really really far gone, a few of
them innocently sank down only to reveal black/green horror inside (albeit a
bit dried out from memory). That 'find' was the result of having to check
about fifty eggs at one go that had been laid undiscovered under a shrub in
the garden the previous Autumn (Fall) and not discovered until early summer
the following year.
I thought something was up when they were laying so few, but put it down to
the moult lasting extra long time - until I discovered this bonanza hidden
by trees shrubs and undergrowth! BTW none of those were fit for human
consumption, but the one or two that didn't smell bad were recycled to the
girls. Hadn't thought about boiling them whole with shells on though, what
a good idea.
