I'm really sorry. I viewed it as an attack & perhaps reacted too quickly.
Everyone has been extremely helpful & I thank you. She's my 1st chicken,
except for the ones I took care of at PigHoppers. The edge of our property
is about 100 yards from the Akron City limit line, so finding a 'stray'
chicken in the horse pasture was a bit disconcerting. Don't know where she
came from; maybe someone dropped her because they knew I'd keep her.
Dunno.
That was 3 years ago. How long can they live? She's a very healthy 11
pounds
(but I think she's dropped some when she was sick). Bo, my hen, is doing
great! She likes those little McDonald's cream cups, so I put her
antibiotics in it, which she's done with now, but slurped happily down &
is
now her normal exuberant self. I'm putting her to bed well before dusk now
but haven't had any luck catching the critter. Evidently it's smarter than
us. I know the trapping/release laws in Ohio & would never release one in
a
park or elsewhere, but we own another empty 4 acre property that is
adjacent
to hundreds of empty acres & since we own the property, I think it's
legal.
At least my trapper guy says it is.

Is it OK to feed them table scraps? She gets the regular chicken crumbles,
but she LOVES corn, pizza, mashed potatoes, peas, bread, etc. She can
strip
an ear of corn faster than me. I don't give her any meat tho.

Hi Candi, they can have some table scraps, but think of them as junk food
for chickens - be very sparing with them as they do not contain the
nutrition your hen will need, so use them only as treats. Mine all love
corn too, but be careful with processed foods such as pizza as they contain
very high salt levels, and mashed potato isn't that good for her either.
Funnily enough meat can be quite beneficial to their diets, rich in protein,
so you don't need to banish that. Think about what they would eat
naturally - grubs and worms - they are of course meat! I've certainly
included a bit of cat food here and there to perk them up (specially during
the winter and after the moult). Stick to the crumbles for her main diet,
and be sure to include some crushed oyster shell/ grit and some greens
(cabbage, kale etc) for her to peck at (usually works best if you can hang
it up for her) as those will be beneficial for her calcium intake -
essential for her feathers, bones and egg production.

If you have a look at her poops, that should give you a pretty good idea how
healthy her diet is. Runny/orangey/ fizzy and smelly - these are not good
signs - a healthy diet will give a virtually odourless firm dark
greenish -brown and white (tho colour will vary a little) stool.
Lots of folks on here have offered great advice and their own experiences
feeding chickens, so if you get a chance have a look through the archives.
Hope that helps a little
Rosie
