Do you free range your chooks all over your place? I have
mine confined to the orchard which would be about a quarter
of an acre and their night house and small yard is withing
htis area.. they do great service cleaning up orchard pest
and fallen fruit (as you've probalby figured out by now, I
don't use any pesticides)

pretty much, but they confine themselves to the 3 acres
around the house. i had a peach orchard when i moved here, but
the trees were in decline (peaches are pretty short lived
trees), so i pastured my boy llamas in the orchard, let them
browse down the trees & now it's my winter stock pasture. i
would like to plant chestnut & fruit trees in part of the
summer pasture, but i'll need to keep the llamas & goats out.
they don't nibble on my black walnut trees, but they pretty
much destroy fruit trees in a day or so.
the chooks like digging around in my veggie garden. i grow
veggies in raised beds, so i can just pop a chicken wire cover
over newly planted ones until the plants are big enough the
chickens won't bother them, then i put more wire around the
tomatoes when they start ripening. keeps the weeds & bad bugs
down.
I lust after the Americna lamps
that one can still buy - used by the Amish etc but I can't
remember the brand name now - very expensive but gorgeous
lamps.

oh, i bet it's Aladdin. they make some really beautiful parlor
lamps, with enough light to read by.

The nut fromt his tree can be used just like a candle.
It's quite amazing to see a nut that burns like a candle.

interesting... how does one figure out which trees have the
high cyanide content? eat the nuts & see if you get sick?
