When I was out feeding our chickens yesterday and I noticed that
some of our birds had some blood around their rump where it looked
like some of their tail feathers had been pulled out ( I am
assuming from the roosters mounting them). Upon closer inspection,
I found that some of them had tiny light brownish mites crawling
all over them. Does anyone know what these mites are and how I can
get rid of them, and are they harmful to the birds?

Yes you want to get rid of them, and yes they can harm the birds, but
without knowing where in the world you live its impossible to advise
you about medications - the rules and availability vary so much

I haven't seen any mites* but there is a reddening and there are a
few spots of blood round Gen's vent.

I was going to ring you. What do we do?

*that doesn't mean there aren't any, just that we haven't seen them

We use Poultry Shield as a house cleaner and have had no problems this year
despite all around us having horrid times [it was a warmer summer than most
here] - we have sold it to those with problems with great success.
A 10% solution is a great cleaner for the house and will dessicate any
micro-organisms
A 20% solution can be used in an infection situation on all the housing and
equipment and its safe to use on birds as well

To look for red mite particularly the best place is under roosts in the
morning
