... I read on the Talk part of the Wikipedia

You shouldn't believe everything you read. Especially on Wiki.

article on eggs that the chicks are thrown away in the UK. Since I have
no direct experience with hatcheries in the UK, I accepted that as read,
however unlikely it seems. However, I know there are VAST cultural
differences between the UK and the US when it comes to frugality. For
instance, one of the recurring quarrels between my husband and me is that
he wants to throw something away I believe will be useful in the future.

And you think that doesn't happen here?

The Depression hit much harder here,

How on Earth do you know that? We didn't share your Depression' but we've
had our own.

....

So you've never made a deal to take stale bread or mushy veggies for your
flock from a grocery store for little or nothing, relieving the store of
the hassle of disposing of it and turning it into an asset? If not, can
you not conceive of where such a creative arrangement could (and probably
would) be made?

a) Jill has a LOT of poultry and there's be no point in feeding scraps.
What's more, she is very knowledgeable about all matters poultry, that's why
people here are always asking her advice.

b) it's illegal here to feed stale bread and mushy vegetables to poultry.

c) I wouldn't feed anything which isn't fit for humans to my few bantams, no
matter what the law said.
